I
still remember the first day when Eyjafjallajökull erupted. I was driving home
from a dance that was celebrated in a small farm town. It was dark outside at
11pm. Everyone was still at the dance, but I had to leave early because I had
practice in the morning after. When I was driving back home, I saw fire far
away. It looked like flames in the mountains. The first thing I thought about
was the volcano (My house is in the middle of mountain circle and I can see two
volcanoes from there). It was very late
and almost everyone that I knew was drunk at this dance. I got a little bit
scared because I do not really watch the news and I did not know if people were
expecting an eruption, especially those who were at the dance. My sister was at
home pregnant so I called her and told her what I was watching and asked her to
look at the news online to see if there was something about the eruption. There
was nothing in the news and she just thought I was stupid. She told me that
there was probably a burning house there somewhere and I saw it that well
because it was so dark outside. I did not say anything to her. I know I say
sometimes something stupid, but I knew that this was not a burning house or
something like that.
This night I woke up at 2 am with a text
message from my sister. Everywhere in the news there was something about the
eruption in Eyjafjallajökull. I slept so bad this night because I was so
nervous about the people at that dance. I knew the lava and the water from the
eruption could not come to my town, but I knew that the lava from another
volcano could go to that small farm town where the dance was, but I did not
know the name of it and I was so nervous. I found out the day after that the
lava from Eyjafjallajökull could not go to the small farm town. It was the
biggest news in Iceland and everyone were talking about it. I could see the
smoke from the volcano from my house. It was first in the news at 11:32 pm. In
the news they said that they thought it had begun a little bit earlier and that
was true. I saw it at 11:05 pm and I was probably one of the first people in
all of Iceland.
